What does it take to survive? That's a question that (ideally) we will never have to answer personally and immediately, but no matter what, survival is a fundamental concern for all humans--and indeed, for all living creatures. Survival often reveals fractures within (previously or apparently) tight-knit groups. Survival often calls forth qualities of personality from unexpected sources. Fundamentally, many survival stories focus on what it means to be human under the most extreme circumstances.
NOTE: Obviously, survival narratives deal with extreme circumstances. Those circumstances may include violence, self-harm, injury, death, or extreme measures taken to preserve one's own life or the life of others. Please be advised that content in these selections is intended for a general adult audience. As a reminder, AP Language and Composition is considered the equivalent of a first-year English course at the college level. IF YOU HAVE CONCERNS about the suggested texts on this independent choice-based list, please see me and we will work out an acceptable compromise. |
NOTE: The works on this list are generally considered important or classic in this genre. However, given the nature of the subject, not all works are universally acceptable to all audiences.
Students are encouraged to research all works by using such resources as Amazon, Goodreads, kidsinmind.org or the teacher. The works on this list are VOLUNTARILY chosen by individual students. Though the assignment of independent reading may be mandatory, the specific works themselves are not and are open to negotiation out of respect for students' values and different life experiences.
